Granjeou prestígio internacional, tendo sido considerada uma das 200 Melhores Galerias do Mundo (in «The World’s 200 Best Contemporary Art Galleries», M.M.

GALERIA LUÍS SERPA PROJECTOS celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2014

«At the beginning of 1984, a project entitled Zoo&Lógica opened at Galeria Cómicos. Its very name announced a performance that, because of its specific characteristics, came to represent the first work of the new Portuguese dance. Zoo&Lógica was the first radical deviation from the established aesthetics and patterns of dance performances in Portugal» [António Pinto Ribeiro, 1991]. «Under the personalised leadership of Luís Serpa, Galeria Cómicos opened in 1984, springing from the After Modernism exhibition, and almost immediately became the Portuguese gallery that most clearly expressed the peculiar artistic dynamics of the 1980s, gaining a certain degree of recognition within a very short time and demonstrating a capacity for international affirmation, which made it quite unique in the history of Portuguese galleries» [Alexandre Melo, 1999].

«We will delve into the territories of artistic research in an interchange between those disciplines that have led to a crisis in the old frontiers, disobeying the established imperative of identity card/passport, previously acquired ethnic group or citizenship [...] and establishing an intense dialogue between the imaginary and the fantastic, the everyday and the banal, in a dialectic tension between different aesthetic experiences. In this way, thanks to some kind of time machine, there now begins an exciting voyage that touches upon both the past and the future. Let us therefore sit down and wait: we shall see paraded before us things, characters and situations» [Serpa, 1984].

The exhibitions that have been held at the gallery since then are a reflection of the profile that Luís Serpa has maintained over the years and which has enabled him to establish a preferential relationship with public and private collectors. In Portugal, too, Cómicos was a cultural agent that led the change taking place in the visual arts scene by presenting exhibitions from a variety of artistic disciplines, such as painting, sculpture, design, architecture and, above all, photography and video.

«Luís Serpa continues to develop an original concept for exhibition programmes that is quite untypical of a gallery. Indeed, despite the fact that everything takes place in the commercial space where he normally carries out his activity as a gallery owner, each group or solo exhibition is governed by a globalising concept that is more commonly found in a good museum than in a space of this kind» [Luísa Soares de Oliveira, 2004].

Demonstrating, from the outset, a vocation for fruitful exchanges with its foreign counterparts, the gallery has brought to Portugal some of the most significant contemporary artists. With Portuguese artists, it has fulfilled its role as a dynamic gallery, publicising and promoting their work mainly abroad, through participation in art fairs, from Madrid to Zurich and Basel, or from Tokyo and Yokohama to Los Angeles and Chicago.

During its thirty years of activity [1984_2014], the gallery has presented 225 exhibitions, and, in partnership with O MUSEU TEMPORÁRIO and with the cooperation of various Cultural Centres and Museums, it has produced 35 solo and thematic exhibitions, as well as participating in over 30 art fairs [Lisbon, Madrid, London, Basel, Zurich, Marseille, Yokohama, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Chicago].

The international prestige that it enjoys is demonstrated by its being considered one of the 200 Best Galleries in the world [in “The World’s 200 Best Contemporary Art Galleries”, M.M. Editions, 1991, France].

«Thematic exhibitions in which there are intersecting discourses, interdependent disciplines, overlapping generations and complementary works now define the gallery’s profile, which in this way brings it closer to the desire to museumise reality and/or to determine a critical discourse about it, as if it were a genuine embryo of a museum or a cultural centre» [João Pinharanda, 2004].
